New mobile towers to fix blackspots in western Victoria

Improving mobile connectivity is a priority for communities along the proposed Western Renewables Link (WRL) route and in response to what we’ve heard, we’re investing over $3 million to build three new mobile communication towers in Lexton, Smeaton, and Coimadai.

The investment is part of our Community Benefit Sharing Program, designed to deliver practical, lasting improvements for communities along the proposed route. The new towers will address long-standing mobile blackspots and provide enhanced 4G and 5G coverage for residents, businesses, and emergency services.

Reliable mobile service is essential for everyday life, supporting remote work, education, and local enterprise, and enabling people to stay connected with family and friends. It also plays a critical role in community safety, particularly during emergency events.

The locations for the investment were identified following feasibility work by Telstra, which confirmed the need for improved mobile service in these areas. Further mobile towers will be considered along the WRL route if the project receives planning approval.

This investment reflects our commitment to listening to community needs and delivering benefits that strengthen regional resilience and connectivity, both now and into the future.
