Community Benefits
A reliable energy system is essential for all Victorians, and the Western Renewables Link (WRL) will play a critical role in securing our energy future. The communities that host this vital infrastructure are at the heart of making it possible.
The Western Renewables Link is committed to delivering positive, lasting outcomes for communities along the proposed route.
The Community Benefit Sharing Program recognises the vital role these communities play in enabling the project. In response to community feedback, the program has been expanded to include funding during the development phase. This means a range of initiatives will begin rolling out in 2025, ahead of planning approval.
If the project proceeds, additional funding will be made available and a separate WRL Community Benefit Fund will be implemented. The Community Benefit Fund will be co-designed with the community. AusNet will invite community input on potential benefit-sharing initiatives, providing landholders and residents with the opportunity to contribute ideas and help shape programs that reflect local needs and deliver lasting value to communities across the region.

Waubra’s new playground: Powered by community spirit and WRL support
Families in Waubra are set to enjoy a brand-new playground thanks to the passion of a group of local mums and a $200,000 investment from the Western Renewables Link’s Community Benefit Sharing Program. The upgraded play space will feature climbing structures, swings, slides, safety fencing, a BBQ area, and picnic tables, and is designed to cater to toddlers through to pre-teens. Located near The Springs Hotel on the Pyrenees Highway, the playground will also serve as a welcoming rest stop for travelling families, boosting local visitor spend.
This community-led initiative has been backed by AusNet. The funding has helped transform a modest upgrade into a vibrant, modern play space. The project has also received strong support from the Victorian Government’s Tiny Towns Fund, Waubra Wind Farm Community Fund, and grassroots fundraising efforts including bingo, sheep sales and trivia nights. With contributions from local groups like Waubra Kindergarten and Primary School and local sporting clubs, the playground is expected to be completed by year’s end. Shaped by strong community input and practical partnerships, the playground is proof that local ideas, backed by the right support, can deliver real outcomes for regional communities.
Improving mobile connectivity in western Victoria
To address long-standing mobile blackspots in western Victoria, the Western Renewables Link project is investing over $3 million to build new communication towers in Lexton, Smeaton, and Coimadai. These upgrades will deliver improved 4G and 5G coverage, supporting local residents, businesses, and emergency services. The initiative responds directly to community feedback and aims to enhance safety, connectivity, and quality of life across the region. Additional tower locations are being explored in partnership with Telstra, pending project approvals.
