Easement

What happens when AusNet receives a planning referral for land near transmission lines?

AusNet is a referral authority under the Victoria Planning Provisions, which also includes other relevant servicing agencies such as water and gas suppliers.

When a landholder submits a planning application to their local council, AusNet will receive notice of this if the proposed building or works are within 60 metres of a major electricity transmission line (220 kilovolts or more) or an electricity transmission easement operated by AusNet.

AusNet reviews the proposal to ensure safety regulations are met and that the development does not interfere with the transmission easement.

AusNet typically responds by outlining the easement rights and restrictions to help councils and landholders make informed decisions.

This process is part of Victoria’s planning framework and applies to all transmission companies.
